Four of the five tightest-pattern clubs also ranked among the shortest in the 2026 test. Mizuno JPX One was the exception, finishing less than eight yards behind the longest club.

The 2026 test measured each shot by its total distance and how far offline it finished. Plot those results and the shots form an ellipse; a smaller area means a tighter pattern. Of the 20 fairway woods tested, these five produced the smallest areas.

Tour Edge Exotics Max had the tightest pattern. Mizuno JPX One delivered the strongest balance of consistency and distance.

The JPX One recorded a 2,746-square-yard shot area, the fourth-tightest result in the full test. It finished less than eight yards behind the longest club, with about average distance and a slight tendency toward higher spin. At $349.99, it sits in the middle of the category's price range.

That balance set it apart from the other four clubs.

Tour Edge Exotics Max led the test with a 2,322-square-yard area. It also earned the highest forgiveness score among the fairway woods tested, while finishing about 14 yards behind the longest club. At $249.99, it costs less than the $350 to $400 common for many fairway woods. Golfers prioritizing position off the tee or more consistent layups may accept the distance trade-off.

COBRA OPTM Max ranked second, with a 2,427-square-yard area. It was highly forgiving but about 12 yards behind the longest club. Its launch was the second-lowest in the test, while its spin was high. That combination may suit golfers who tend to hit fairway woods too high.

Takomo IGNIS D2 posted a 2,632-square-yard area and was the shortest club tested, nearly 16 yards behind the longest. It also had the second-lowest ball speed and the highest spin. Its steep descent sent shots up and down softly, which can help on long approaches where holding a green matters, at the cost of yardage. Takomo's direct-to-consumer model typically means lower prices than major brands.

Ben Hogan PTx Max made the list with a 3,118-square-yard area, just ahead of the Fourteen FX-001. It had the lowest ball speed in the test and unspectacular distance, but its pattern remained steady. For golfers who value predictable results over extra yards, it is the option here.

Four of the five tightest-pattern clubs were also the four shortest in the test. Loft and shaft can change fairway wood performance. Lie angle can, too, so fitting remains important when comparing these results with an individual golfer's game. Golf Monthly's fairway-wood recommendations were published on October 7, 2026, and updated on October 12.
